On 6 April 1829 JS signed an agreement to purchase properties (land and buildings) from his father-in-law, Isaac Hale, in Harmony, Pennsylvania. This document, a deed from JS’s in-laws dated 25 August 1830, acknowledged receipt of JS’s payment in full. After Isaac and Elizabeth Hale signed and sealed the deed, JS’s friend John Whitmer and Jesse Lane, a local justice of the peace, signed as witnesses.
The document consists of a printed form with handwritten additions. An endorsement inscribed on the document indicates that it conveys a deed from Isaac Hale to JS and is dated “August 31, 1830.” An embossed seal is partially legible. The document also notes that it was recorded at the “Susquehanna County Office for Recording Deeds &c” in Deed Book No 8 page 59 on 31 August 1830.
