A Revelation to Joseph & Sidney [Rigdon] Recd at Fayette  Seneca County state of NY telling them why James [Covel] Receivd  not the obeyed not the Command which he Received &c
Behold verily I say unto you that his heart was  right before me for he covenanted with me that he would  obey my word & he Received the word with Gladness but  Straitway Satan came & tempted him & the fear of persecution  & the cares of the world caused him to reject the word  wherefore he broke the covenant which he had made  & it Remaineth in me to do with him as seemeth  me good [p. 60]
James Covel had been a Baptist minister for forty years. Soon after the church’s 2 January 1831 conference he apparently met with JS and covenanted to obey direction the Lord gave him by revelation. Despite the counsel addressed to him, he soon rejected Mormonism and returned to his former situation. Directed to JS and Sidney Rigdon, this text explained Covel’s actions.
John Whitmer copied this text into Revelation Book 1 as “43rd Commandment January 6th 1831” sometime between March and June 1831. The 1833 Book of Commandments dates this revelation to January 1831 at Fayette Township, New York. The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants gives the same date but no location.
