Revelation, 1 June 1833 [D&C 95]

  • Kirtland June 1st. 1833—

    Verily thus saith the Lord unto you whom I love, and whom I love  I also chasten that their sins may be forgiven, for with the chas tisement I prepare a way for their deliverance in all things out of  temptation and I have loved you therefore ye must needs be chast ned and stand rebuked before my face. for ye have sinned  against me a verry grievous sin in that ye have not considered  the great commandment in all things that I have given unto you  concerning the building of mine house for the preparation where with I deign to prepare mine Apostles to prune my vineyard  for the last time that I may bring to pass my strange act  that I may pour out my spirit upon all flesh. But behold  verily I say unto you there are many who have been ordained  among you whom I called but few of them are chosen. they  who are not chosen have sinned a verry grievous sin in that  they are walking in darkness at noon day, and for this cause  I gave unto you a commandment that you should call  your solem assembly that your fastings and your mourn ing might come up into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth  which is by interpretation the creator of all things the first day  the beginning and the end. Yea verily I say unto you I gave  unto you a commandment that you should build an house  in the which house I design to endow those whom I have [p. 59]

A December 1832 revelation sanctioned the building of a “house of the Lord” in Kirtland, Ohio, dedicated to both instruction and worship. In May 1833 a conference of high priests appointed a committee to raise the necessary funds for construction. The committee prepared a circular to seek subscriptions to fund the project.

This revelation underscored the seriousness of that undertaking, stressing the endowment of spiritual power expected to occur at the Lord’s house. The revelation also provided information on the dimensions and spatial functions of the building.

Orson Hyde transcribed this text into Revelation Book 2 in mid-1833, having been chosen as clerk to the presidency of the high priesthood on 6 June 1833. It is identified only by date and location, “Kirtland June 1st 1833.” John Whitmer later recorded a copy in Revelation Book 1 as “Revelation given Kirtland June 1, 1833.” The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants includes this revelation with a date of June 1833 but no location. Other evidence suggests 3 June as a possible date.
