View Full Bio Hyrum Smith baptized Jared Carter in June 1831 and ordained him a priest. Carter departed Ohio that fall on his first mission, serving in New York and Vermont. Upon his return, Carter visited JS at Hiram, Ohio, and sought information concerning his next assignment. This revelation directed Carter to return to the eastern states to preach. After a Kirtland conference of elders appointed JS’s brother-in-law Calvin Stoddard as Carter’s companion, Carter ordained Stoddard to the priesthood office of teacher, and they commenced their mission on 15 April 1832.

Williams recorded this text in Revelation Book 2, where it is designated “A Revelation given to Jared Carter March 12th 1832 in Hiram Pordage County Ohio.” John Whitmer subsequently copied this revelation with the same date and place into Revelation Book 1. The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants included this revelation and dated it March 1832 but gave no location.
