to the calling wherewith your called even to be a high Priest in my church and councellor unto my servant Joseph unto whom <I> have given the keys of the Kingdom which belongs to always to the prisidency of the high Priesthood; therefor verily I acknowledge him and will bless him and also thee inasmuch as thou art faithful in councel in the office which I have appointed unto you and in prayer always vocally and in thy heart in public and in private also in the ministry in proclaiming the gospel in the Land of the living and among thy Brethren and in doing these things thou wilt do the greatest good unto thy fellow beings and will promote the glory of him who is your

View Glossary In connection with the developing organizational structure of the church, a November 1831 revelation appointed JS to be the “president of the high priesthood,” to which office he was ordained on 25 January 1832 during a conference at Amherst, Ohio. On 8 March 1832 JS ordained Jesse Gause and Sidney Rigdon to be his counselors in the “ministry of the presidency of the high priesthood.” This revelation called Gause to be faithful in his assignment. Although he complied at the outset, Gause had disassociated from the church by the end of 1832 and was excommunicated on 3 December of that year.

Williams recorded this text in Revelation Book 2 in March 1832, noting the location and date as “Hiram Portage Co Ohio March 15th 1832.” John Whitmer later copied the text into Revelation Book 1, where it is identified as “83 Revelation given to Jesse Gause Hiram Portage March 15. 1832.” An unidentified hand later lined out “Jesse Gause” and inserted “Frederick G. Williams.” The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants included this revelation with a date of March 1832 but gave no location.
