meek and lowly of heart and that which I have appointed unto him is that he shall go with my servant Oliver [Cowdery] and Peter [Whitmer Jr.] into the wilderness among the Lamanites and Ziba [Peterson] also shall go with them and I myself will go with them and be in their midst and I am their advocate with the Father and nothing shall prevail and they shall give heed to that which is writen and pretend to no other revelation and they shall pray always that I may unfold them to their understanding and they shall give heed unto these words and trifle not and I will bless them amen Manchester Oct 1830— [p. 84]

More InfoIn connection with the September 1830 conference, revelations instructed several church elders to go west and preach to the American Indians. Early church members often referred to Indians as “Lamanites” because they associated them with a Book of Mormon people identified by that name. Oliver Cowdery and Peter Whitmer Jr. had previously been designated as missionaries (Revelation, September 1830–B [D&C 28]). This revelation, addressed to Parley P. Pratt and Ziba Peterson, directed them to join Cowdery and Whitmer on their mission.

That information does not appear in Revelation Book 1 or in the 1833 Book of Commandments. The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants follows the October 1830 dating but does not identify the location.
