Ezra Thayer and Northrop Sweet, to whom this October 1830 revelation was directed, had been members of the church for less than a month at the time. The revelation appointed them to the ministry and provided instruction regarding their preaching. It touched on several themes that pervade the early revelations—the corrupt state of Christendom, the imminence of Jesus’s return, the gathering of the elect, and the restoration of Christ’s church.
John Whitmer copied this text into Revelation Book 1, where it is designated “35th Commandment AD 1830,” sometime between March and June 1831. Edward Partridge made a copy of this revelation at the end of 1830 or early in 1831, but only a portion is extant. The 1833 Book of Commandments dates this revelation to October 1830 at Fayette Township, New York. The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants gives the same date but no location.
