This revelation added an American setting to the concept of a literal gathering of Israel. (The Book of Mormon had already indicated that a New Jerusalem was to be built somewhere on the American continent.) Much of this revelation focuses on the implications of a “gathering” in regard to the end of the world and Jesus’ second coming. Disagreements among some church members over the nature of Adam’s fall apparently precipitated the revelation.
John Whitmer copied this text into Revelation Book 1 as “29th Commandment AD 1830” sometime between March and June 1831. Subsequently, Oliver Cowdery added “September” to the date. The 1833 Book of Commandments assigns the date of September 1830, as does the1835 Doctrine and Covenants. Orson Hyde also recorded a copy into his notebook of revelations, perhaps in early 1832.
