Biography

1804–24 Dec. 1854. Carpenter. Born in New York. Son of Isaac Gates Bishop and Mary Hyde. Raised Methodist. Resided in Livonia, Ontario Co., New York, ca. 1809–1819. Moved to Gates, Genesee Co. (later in Monroe Co.), New York, by 1820. Married Harriet Phebe Osborn, 13 Dec. 1827. Moved to Brighton, Monroe Co., by 1830. Moved to Lima, Livingston Co., New York, by 1831. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1833. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, ca. June 1834. Ordained a seventy, by Apr. 1836. Appointed member of Kirtland high council, by May 1836. Received elder’s license, 16 June 1836, in Kirtland. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved to Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois, by 1840. Member of stake presidency in Springfield. Ordained a high priest, by 6 Nov. 1847. Joined James Brewster’s Church of Christ; later joined Austin Cowles’s Church of Christ. Died in Sangamon Co.
