Myers, Jacob, Sr.

Biography

11 Aug. 1782–17 Oct. 1867. Farmer, millwright. Born at Pence, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania. Son of Frederick Myers and Elizabeth Wirick. Married Sarah Colman, 5 Jan. 1804, at Jefferson Co., Ohio. Lived in Richland Co., Ohio, 1804–ca. 1836. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ca. 1834. Ordained an elder by Oliver Cowdery and John Whitmer, 7 June 1835. Presiding elder of church branches in Perry, Worthington, and Green townships, Richland Co., 1836. Led company from southern Richland Co. to Missouri, 1836; settled near Shoal Creek, Caldwell Co., Missouri. Built mill at Hawn’s Mill settlement on Shoal Creek. Moved near Payson, Adams Co., Illinois, spring 1839. Presiding elder of church branch at Freedom, Adams Co., Illinois, 1842. Moved to Pottawattamie Co., Iowa Territory, ca. 1846, eventually settling in what became Council Bluffs. Appointed bishop to watch over families left behind in Iowa Territory when Mormon Battalion volunteers left for U.S. war with Mexico, 1846. Lived in Michigan, 1857. Buried at Owl Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, in Ankenytown, Knox Co., Ohio.
