Biography

8 Apr. 1808–10 Apr. 1860. Schoolteacher, farmer, cooper, blacksmith. Born at Warren Co. (later Simpson Co.), Kentucky. Son of James Butler and Charity Lowe. Member of Methodist church, then Baptist church. Married Caroline Farzine Skeen, 3 Feb. 1831, at Sumner Co., Tennessee. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by James Emmett, 9 Mar. 1835, possibly in Drake’s Creek area of Simpson Co. Moved to Clay Co., Missouri, 1836; to Caldwell Co., Missouri, fall 1836; and to Daviess Co., Missouri, ca. 1838. One of principal participants in election-day fight at Gallatin, Daviess Co., 6 Aug. 1838. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, by 1839. Ordained a seventy, 1839, near Quincy. Lived at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1840. Served two missions among Sioux Indians, 1840–1841. Practiced plural marriage during JS’s lifetime. Lived at Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, 1850. Migrated to Utah Territory, 1852. Settled at Spanish Fork, Utah Co., Utah Territory, where he was bishop from 1856 until his death.
