Moved to Missouri, 1831. Married Martha Head, 14 May 1833, in Randolph Co., Missouri. Member of Missouri House of Representatives, 1836–1838, 1840–1844. Served in Missouri militia, 1838–1839, and participated in Mormon War. Moved to Chariton Co., Missouri, by June 1840. Elected to U.S. Congress, 1844; resigned to serve in Mexican War, 12 Aug. 1846. Became military governor of what became New Mexico, 1847. Served as Missouri governor, 1852–1856. Commissioned major general in Confederate army in Civil War, 1862. Moved to Mexico. Moved to St. Louis, 11 Feb. 1867. Died in St. Louis.
