Summary

First settled by French at Vincennes, early 1700s.1 Acquired by England in French and Indian War, 1763.2 U.S. took possession of area following American Revolution, 1783.3 Area became part of Northwest Territory, 1787.4 Partitioned off of Northwest Territory and established as Indiana Territory, 1800.5 Admitted to U.S. as nineteenth state, 11 Dec. 1816.6 Indianapolis established as seat of government, by Jan. 1825.7 Population in 1820 about 150,000; in 1830 about 340,000; in 1840 about 690,000.8 First LDS missionaries preached in area, summer 1831.9 JS and other church members, including Camp of Israel, traveled through state numerous times en route to and from Missouri.10 See also Richmond and Winchester.
