Summary

Long Island residence of James Arlington Bennet, who corresponded with JS, 1842–1843.1 Bennet reportedly was proprietor, architect, and designer of house.2 House measured seventy-four by eighty feet and featured two greenhouses.3 Surrounded on three sides by sixteen thirty-foot columns with caps invented and designed by Bennet.4 Example of new class of architecture known as Columbian Order.5
