Fulness of the scriptures

Summary

The revelatory additions and revisions JS made to the Bible; also called his “translation” of the Old and New Testaments.1 The Book of Mormon text stated that it contained “plain and precious things” that had been removed from the Bible and promised that these things would be restored.2 Part of that restoration was the dictation of an extensive June 1830 revelation providing the “words of God which he spake unto Moses,” which served as a preface to the book of Genesis.3 From late 1830 to 1833, JS worked on further revising the Old and New Testaments—adding material, expanding existing content, deleting material, and making other changes.4 According to a March 1831 revelation, these revisions to the Bible would make “all things” known to the church.5 JS informed church leaders in October 1831 that the church would “yet fall” unless it received this “fulness of the Scriptures.”6 Another revelation explained that the scriptures would be given to JS “even as they are in mine [i.e., God’s] own bosom.”7
