However, as entered by Cowdery in 1835, the text of the blessing was greatly expanded; over fifty-six percent of the text in the patriarchal blessing book is not present in the journal version. The additions discuss miracles that Smith would perform, as well as promises that he would be greatly rewarded in the hereafter for his service and preaching on earth.

A June 1834 revelation informed church members that the redemption of Zion would not come until the elders of the church had been “endowed with power from on high.” This endowment was to come in the House of the Lord the Saints were constructing in Kirtland, Ohio. (Revelation, 22 June 1834 [D&C 105:9–11]; see also Revelation, 1 June 1833 [D&C 95:8]; and Revelation, 2 Jan. 1831 [D&C 38:32].)
