“Brother German” was likely William Guy Jarman, a member of the New York City branch. According to the minutes of the 21 April council of official members of the Philadelphia branch, “Sister Jarman also of N York” heard Winchester disparage Nicholson’s character to Caroline Adams, stating “that if she had conducted herself properly since she came into the Church,” her previous actions “would have been overlooked.” Winchester’s statement made Jarman think that Nicholson “was a bad Character.” (“Conference Minutes,” Times and Seasons, 15 Apr. 1842, 3:765; Philadelphia, PA, Council Minutes, 21–22 Apr. 1843, General Ecclesiastical Court Trials, CHL.)

Both Hyde and Hyrum Smith were in Philadelphia on a few different occasions. Hyde, for example, visited Philadelphia in 1840. Smith traveled there twice in 1841 and again in October 1842 when he and William Law visited the branch to set it in order. (Letter from Orson Hyde, 28 Sept. 1840; Erastus Snow, Journal, 1841–1847, 3; Philadelphia Branch Record Book, 6 Apr. 1841 and 15 Oct. 1842, 16, 32.)
