Edwards, Benjamin Stephenson
Biography
13 June 1818–4 Feb. 1886. Lawyer, judge. Born at Edwardsville, Madison Co., Illinois. Son of Ninian Edwards and Elvira Lane. Moved to Belleville, St. Clair Co., Illinois, 1824. Graduated from Yale, 1838, in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Admitted to Illinois bar, 1839. Married Helen Kissam Dodge, 13 Aug. 1839. Moved to Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois, by June 1840. Acted as a defense attorney in JS's extradition case, 1843. Served as delegate to Illinois constitutional convention, 1862. Elected circuit court judge, 1869, in Springfield. Served as president of Illinois State Bar Association. Died at Springfield.
