Biography
20 Dec. 1817–25 Dec. 1889. Farmer, teacher, fruit grower, wood chopper. Born in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. Son of Samuel Canfield and Sabina Davenport. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by June 1840. Married first Louisa Jones, 20 Oct. 1841, in Kirtland. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by Apr. 1842. Received elder’s license, 9 Apr. 1842, in Nauvoo. Appointed to serve mission in Illinois, July 1843. Ordained a seventy, by Jan. 1846. Served in Mormon Battalion, 1846–1847. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, by 1850. Moved to Ogden, Weber Co., Utah Territory, by 1850. Elected to Ogden city council, Feb. 1851. Served in Weber Co. militia. Disfellowshipped, before 20 Mar. 1855. Moved to California, 5 Oct. 1855. Excommunicated, 16 Mar. 1856, in San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., California. Resident of Tulare Co., California, by 1860. Fruit grower in Placer Co., California, by 1870. Wife died, 1871. Married second Sarah Ann Northrop, 4 Nov. 1874, in Lander Co., Nevada. Resident of Grantsville, Nye Co., Nevada, by 1880. Moved to Stillwater, Churchill Co., Nevada, by Dec. 1889, where he died.
