Davis, Daniel Coon
Biography
23 Feb. 1804–ca. 1 June 1850. Ferry boat operator. Born in Petersburg, Rensselaer Co., New York. Son of William Davis and Miriam (Mariam) Coon. Married first Sophronia Fuller, ca. 1827. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Appointed captain of a ferry that provided service to Commerce, Hancock Co., Illinois, and surrounding communities. Appointed to move to Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, Sept. 1842. Married second Susan (Susanna) Moses, 4 Mar. 1844, in Montrose, Lee Co. Ordained a seventy, by Dec. 1845. Served in Mormon Battalion, 1846–1847. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1848; settled near present-day Farmington, Davis Co., Utah Territory. Davis Co. named after him. Died at Fort Kearney, near present-day Kearney, Buffalo Co., Nebraska, en route to eastern U.S.
