Prentiss, Daniel
Biography
31 Jan. 1796–29 Dec. 1882. Merchant, railroad contractor, farmer. Born in Weathersfield, Windsor Co., Vermont. Son of Thomas Prentiss and Mary Spencer. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. 1833. Worked as merchant, ca. 1835, in Carthage, Hancock Co. Contracted to grade portion of Warsaw and Peoria Railroad, 1838–1839, in Illinois. Married Nancy Hughes, 24 June 1840, in Adams Co., Illinois. Moved to Fountain Green, Hancock Co., by 1840. Joined Hancock Masonic Lodge, 1843. Served as superintendent of Hancock Co. poor farm, 1852. Served as Fountain Green assessor, 1858, and town supervisor, 1861 and 1867. Died in Fountain Green.
