Biography
3 Oct. 1788–15 Nov. 1845. Farmer, miller. Born in Tiverton, Newport Co., Rhode Island. Son of Perry Durfee and Annie Salisbury. Moved with grandparents to Broadalbin, Montgomery Co., New York, 1801. Married Magdalena Pickle, ca. 1810. Moved to Lenox, Madison Co., New York, by 1811. Operated a mill in Lincoln, Madison Co., before 1815. Moved to Amboy, Oswego Co., New York, by 1822. Moved to Ruggles Township, Huron Co., Ohio, 1830. Member of Methodist church. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Simeon Carter, 15 May 1831, in Ruggles Township; ordained an elder by Simeon Carter and Solomon Hancock shortly after. Ordained a high priest by Oliver Cowdery, 25 Oct. 1831, in Orange, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Appointed to serve mission to Chautauque Co., New York, Dec. 1831. Traveled to Jackson Co., Missouri, to build houses and plant grain, spring 1832. Served mission to eastern states, fall 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, May 1833. Labored on Kirtland temple; one of twenty-four elders who laid temple cornerstone. Moved to Caldwell Co., Missouri, spring 1837, settling six miles south of Far West on Log Creek. Assisted with Latter-day Saint evacuation from Missouri, 29 Jan. 1839. Moved to Yelrome (Morley’s Settlement, later in Tioga), Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. 1839. Appointed to high council of Lima branch, Adams Co., Illinois, June 1843. Killed in Green Plains, Hancock Co.
