Biography
Ca. 1809–4 Dec. 1867. Grocer, commission merchant, steamboat captain, banker. Born in Scotland. Partner with John S. Thompson in grocery and commission merchant firm of Anderson and Thompson, 1840–1845, in St. Louis. Captain of passenger steamer Osprey, 1844 and 1845, which operated between St. Louis and Bloomington, Muscatine Co., Iowa Territory, and made frequent stops in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Moved to Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, 1846. Established grocery business and first bank in Keokuk. Married Elizabeth Johnston, 18 Apr. 1850, in Lee Co. Died in Keokuk.
