Hills, Gustavus
Biography
29 Jan. 1804–18 Oct. 1846. Music teacher, engraver, jeweler, newspaper editor, judge. Born in Chatham, Middlesex Co., Connecticut. Son of Lebbeus Hills and Mary Gibson. Married Elizabeth Mansfield, 25 Dec. 1827, in Middletown, Middlesex Co. Moved to Warren Co., Illinois, by 1840. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Oct. 1841. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by Oct. 1841. Nauvoo city alderman, 1841–1845. Became president of musical lyceum of Nauvoo University, where he was already a professor of music. Selected as assistant editor of Times and Seasons, Jan. 1842, in Nauvoo. Ordained a high priest, by Dec. 1845. Died in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co., Iowa Territory.
