Reid, Hugh T.
Biography
8 Oct. 1811–21 Aug. 1874. Farmer, lawyer, land developer, railroad owner and operator. Born in what became Union Co., Indiana. Son of James Reid and Ann Thompson. Graduated from Indiana College, 1837. Admitted to Indiana bar, 1839. Moved to Fort Madison, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, spring 1839. Prosecuting attorney for Iowa’s First Judicial District, 1840–1842. Married first Charlotte Ann Johnson, 11 Nov. 1841, in Lee Co. Moved to Keokuk, Lee Co., 1843. One of first vestryman of Fort Madison parish of Episcopal Church, 1845. Spoke at meeting for expulsion of Latter-day Saints from Iowa Territory, 16 Oct. 1845. Married second Mary Alexine LeRoy, by 1849. Formulated act that established district court in Keokuk. First pew holder of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Keokuk, Nov. 1851. Served as colonel and brigadier general in Civil War. Died at Keokuk.
