Halsted, James Maver
Biography
5 May 1808–22 Mar. 1888. Merchant, insurance company president. Born in Newton, Sussex Co., New Jersey. Son of Job S. Halsted and Ann McIntire. Moved to New York City, ca. 1824. Presbyterian. Married Catherine Crane, 19 Dec. 1833, in New York City. Became partner in Halsted, Haines & Co., one of largest dry-goods stores in U.S. On 16 Apr. 1839, filed suit against JS and others for outstanding debt for goods purchased 1 Sept. 1837 and 15 Oct. 1838. President of Guardian Life Insurance Company, by Sept. 1859. President of American Fire Insurance Company, by 1862. Elected manager for Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, May 1869. Elected to board of directors of Mercantile Trust Company, Feb. 1876. Died in New York City.
