Biography

12 July 1797–17 July 1874. Farmer, carpenter. Born at Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. Son of Chauncey John Gaylord and Dorithy Taylor. Married first Elizabeth Terry of East Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York, Apr. 1820. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Leonard Rich, 2 Aug. 1835, at Niagara, Niagara Co., New York. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1836. Ordained an elder. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Ordained a seventy by Hazen Aldrich, 20 Dec. 1836. Appointed a president of First Quorum of the Seventy, 6 Apr. 1837, at Kirtland. Excommunicated, 13 Jan. 1838, at Kirtland. Moved to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Rejoined church, 5 Oct. 1839, at Nauvoo. Married second Elvira Edmonds, 31 Dec. 1840, in Walnut Grove, Knox Co., Illinois. Affiliated with James J. Strang at Voree, Walworth Co., Wisconsin. Received into Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; appointed member of high council, 6 Apr. 1860. Died near Burlington, Racine Co., Wisconsin.
