Biography

22 May 1791–27 Apr. 1870. Farmer. Born in Hopkinton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. Son of John Young and Abigail (Nabby) Howe. Moved to Whitingham, Windham Co., Vermont, Jan. 1801. Moved to Sherburne, Chenango Co., New York, 1804. Joined Methodist church, 1806. Married Theodocia Kimball, 1813. Received license to be Methodist preacher, 1825. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by his brother Joseph Young, 6 Oct. 1833, in Hector, Tompkins Co., New York. Ordained an elder, ca. 1834. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1834. Served mission to Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, 1834, and established branch in Nunda, Livingston Co., New York. Assisted in construction of Kirtland temple. Ordained a seventy, by 1836. Moved to Missouri, ca. 1838–1839. Returned to Kirtland, by 1841. Ordained a high priest by Lyman Wight and John P. Greene, 1841. Served as counselor in Kirtland stake presidency, 1841–1845, and as Kirtland stake president, 1845–1847. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, Oct. 1847. Ordained a patriarch, 8 Oct. 1853. Died at Salt Lake City.
