Scammon, Jonathan Young
Biography
27 July 1812–17 Mar. 1890. Lawyer, banker, newspaper publisher, philanthropist. Born at Whitefield, Lincoln Co., Maine. Son of Eliakim Scammon and Joanna Young. Educated in Kennebec Co., Maine, and Lincoln Co. Moved to Chicago, 1835. Served as deputy clerk of Cook Co., Illinois, circuit court, 1835–1836. Appointed attorney for State Bank of Illinois, 1837. Created charter for Chicago public school system, 1837. Married first Mary Ann Haven Dearborn, July 1837, at Bath, Sagadahoc Co., Maine. Served as school board member and reporter for Illinois Supreme Court, 1839–1845. Founded Chicago Society of the New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian), 1843. Served on editorial board of Chicago Daily Journal, 1844. Served as city alderman, 1845. Served as state senator, 1860–1861. Married second Maria Sheldon Wright, 5 Dec. 1867. Died at Chicago.
