Biography

14 May 1805–21 Jan. 1905. Lawyer, judge. Born in Lima, Ontario Co., New York. Son of James Sterling and Mabel Chester. Married Ellen Elizabeth Allen Sterling, 1 Nov. 1835. Moved to Willoughby, Lake Co., Ohio, before 1837. Admitted to the bar, 1837. Attorney for plaintiff in case of Bailey, Keeler & Remsen v. JS and Cowdery, 1837. Attorney of plaintiff in case of Stannard v. Young and JS, Apr. 1838. Elected town clerk, 3 Apr. 1843, in Willoughby. Served as Lake Co. probate judge, 1854–1861. Served on first board of trustees of Willoughby Female Academy, which later became Lake Erie College. Moved to Painesville, Lake Co., by 1860. Appointed Lake Co. prosecuting attorney, 1878. Moved to Glenville, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, 1898. Died at Glenville.
