Biography
18 Mar. 1806–14 Feb. 1889. Farmer, baker, clerk. Born in Middlebury, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Son of Joel Scovil and Lydia. Moved to Portage Co., Ohio, by June 1828. Married Lury Snow, 18 June 1828, in Portage Co. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by JS, 2 July 1836. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by Oct. 1837. Ordained an elder, 8 Oct. 1837, in Kirtland. Moved to Washington Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1841. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge building committee and architect of Nauvoo Masonic Hall. Served as captain in Nauvoo Legion. Ordained a high priest, 20 May 1844, in Nauvoo. Elected Worshipful Master of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, 5 Dec. 1844. Served mission to England, 1846–1847. Returned to U.S., 10 Aug. 1847, and was appointed church immigration agent in New Orleans. Moved to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), 1849. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, Oct. 1850. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by Aug. 1852. Served as clerk of Provo branch, Aug. 1852, and as bishop of branch, by Mar. 1853. Appointed clerk of Second Judicial District Court, in Utah Co., 6 Feb. 1859. Moved to Mount Pleasant, Sanpete Co., Utah Territory, by 1870. Moved to Springville, Utah Co., by 1880. Died in Springville.
