Biography

6/8 Sept. 1815–20 Aug. 1861. Lawyer. Born in Wilmington, Windham Co., Vermont. Son of Silas Axtell and Deborah Perry. Moved to Chautauque Co., New York, ca. 1826. Lived in Carroll, Chautauque Co., 1830. Moved to Perry, Geauga Co., Ohio, fall 1831. Studied law with Benjamin Bissell and attended Painesville Academy, 1834, in Painesville, Geauga Co. Admitted to Ohio bar, Aug. 1837. Partner with Benjamin Bissell in law firm of Bissell & Axtell, 1837–1842, in Painesville. Attorney for plaintiffs in cases of Bailey & Reynolds v. Rigdon et al. and Wright v. Rigdon et al. Attorney for defendants in case of M. Allen v. O. Granger. Married Laura Kerr, 19 Feb. 1839, in Geauga Co. Practiced law under own name, 1842–1852, in Painesville. Served as prosecuting attorney, 1844–1848, in Lake Co., Ohio. Partner in law firm with Loren Prentiss, 1854–1857, in Cleveland. Died in Copper Harbor, Keweenaw Co., Michigan.
