Biography
24 Oct. 1807–7 Apr. 1860. U.S. marshal, mail agent, lawyer, farmer. Born in Grayson Co., Virginia. Son of John Johnson and Lydia. Moved to Ohio, ca. 1815. Moved to Indianapolis, ca. 1817. Married Mary Jane Gordon, 1 May 1838. Moved to Muscatine, Muscatine Co., Iowa Territory, and then to Bloomington, Muscatine Co., 1839. Served as U.S. marshal for Iowa Territory, 1841–1843. Moved to Indiana, 1848. Appointed mail agent and later captain on steamboat Ben Franklin, navigating between Cincinnati and Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, ca. 1848. Moved to Cass Co., Iowa, Jan. 1854. Admitted to Iowa bar, 1854. Moved to Lewis, Cass Co., 1858. Helped organize Lewis Masonic Lodge. Died in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa.
