Potsdam Township, New York
Summary
Located in northeastern part of state, about thirty miles south of Canadian border. Raquette (Racket) River flows through township. Formed from Madrid Township, 1806. Population in 1830 about 3,700. Population in 1840 about 4,500. Included Potsdam village; incorporated 1831. Members of extended Smith family lived in township and neighboring areas. Joseph Smith Sr. served missions to township with son Don Carlos Smith, 1830, and with brother John Smith, 1836, to proselytize members of Smith family.
