Summary
Located in northern New York, about seventy miles southeast of Montreal and about fifteen miles southeast of St. Lawrence River. Landscape hilly and densely forested, with fertile soil. Region drained by St. Regis River. Area settled, by 1803. Formed from Massena Township, 1806. Population in 1820 about 800; in 1830 about 1,900; and in 1840 about 3,000. Joseph Smith Sr. and son Don Carlos proselytized to paternal family members in area, summer 1830. JS mailed letter from Kirtland Mills post office, Kirtland, Ohio, 26 Sept. 1833, to his uncle Silas Smith in Stockholm, urging his acceptance of modern revelation. Joseph Smith Sr. and brother John Smith returned to area as missionaries, 1836.
