Bailey, Keeler & Remsen

Summary

A dry goods store operated by John J. Bailey, Charles Keeler, and Edward Remsen in New York City from 1833 to 1840. JS and Oliver Cowdery, likely acting for the firm Rigdon, Smith & Cowdery, purchased goods on credit from the firm in October 1836. Bailey, Keeler, and Remsen prepared to bring a lawsuit against JS and Oliver Cowdery to recover payment, but the lawsuit was never initiated. In September 1837, Ohio lawyer Lord Sterling helped renegotiate payment of the debt. The debt remained unresolved by 1842, and JS included it in his bankruptcy application.
