H. Smith & Co.
Summary
A mercantile company created and run by Hyrum Smith. It is unclear when Smith started the business. An extant daybook and ledger for the company indicate that he sold goods between July and November 1836. It is not clear if Smith operated an independent store or if he sold goods in the Kirtland stores operated by N. K. Whitney & Co. or Cahoon, Carter & Co. Latter-day Saints Joseph Kingsbury and Vinson Knight acted as clerks for the firm. Smith purchased goods in New York in October 1836 and appears to have sold these and other remaining goods in November 1836, perhaps in connection with closing the business.
