Norfolk latch

Summary

A thumb latch, popular from about 1800 to 1840, that was fairly inexpensive and used standardized parts. The Norfolk latch consisted of an ornamented sheet-iron plate that was screwed into a door and an attached iron grip or handle. The handle’s midpoint had a ribbed or patterned swelling in its midsection. A thumbpiece with a lever was placed above the grip.
