The City Council of the City of held their first meeting at the house of , on Wednesday, February 3d, 1841, at six o’clock, P. M.

Meeting opened by prayer by councillor Joseph Smith.

, Esq., the Mayor, was sworn into office by , J. P.

The Mayor gave notice that had been appointed City Marshal, and requested the public to respect and obey him as such.

Aldermen , , , and ; and Councillors Joseph Smith, , , , , , , and , were sworn into office by the Mayor; having respectively subscribed their oath of office, and the Mayor having duly subscribed his oath of office.

(, who was elected as the other City Councillor, not being present.)

was then duly appointed City Marshal, and sworn; and to continue for two years ensuing.

was appointed City Treasurer, and sworn; and to continue for two years ensuing.

was appointed City Recorder, and sworn; and to continue for two years ensuing.

was appointed Supervisor of Streets, (not present,) and to continue for two years ensuing.

was appointed City Assessor, and sworn; and to continue for t[w]o years ensuing.

The Mayor then addressed the Council and citizens present, with an inaugural speech of considerable length, and read and cited parts of the City Charter, observing as to what he considered should be done in the forthwith, &c., &c.

 

Sec. 1. Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of , That the “University of the City of ,” be, and the same is hereby organized, by the appointment of the following Board of Trustees; to wit: , Chancellor; , Registrar; and Joseph Smith, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , and , Regents; who shall hereafter constitute the “Chancellor and Regents of the University of the City of ,” as contemplated in [p. 12]
