At the council meeting on 22 March 1845, Brigham Young proposed that Hyde write a pamphlet relating “the whole history of Sidney Rigdon for the few years past, as a farewel to Rigdonism.” Hyde’s pamphlet was published in May 1845. (Council of Fifty, “Record,” 22 Mar. 1845.)
Phineas Young recorded in his journal on 23 April 1845, “This day I took the parting hand of my friends in the City of the Saints, and turned my face towards the western wilds, when at the Seventy’s Hall I met my brother Brigham, who said to me go and the blessing of God shall attend you, and you shall accomplish a great work among the Lamanites.” James Monroe, a local schoolteacher, noted in his journal that he had heard a gathering, including “some; of the Twelve,” singing “Upper California.” Monroe wrote, “This together with the fact that an expedition started off to-day or will start soon inclines me to the belief that it is the intention to go to that country when we remove from here.” (Phineas Young, Journal, 23 Apr. 1845; Monroe, Journal, 23 Apr. 1845.)
