Spencer, Shumway, and Daniels were appointed to the Western Mission at the previous council meeting. Spencer was away on an assignment, given by the council on 27 February 1845, to accompany Amasa Lyman on his mission to James Emmett’s company. It is unknown where Daniels was at the time of this meeting. (Council of Fifty, “Record,” 1 Mar. and 27 Feb. 1845.)
According to Dimick B. Huntington, Dana had previously traveled through Arkansas on his way to the Rocky Mountains. (High Priests Quorum Record, 2 Feb. 1845.)
