Latter-day Saints performed ritual washings and anointings as part of the temple liturgy in both Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo. In February 1844 JS, like Kimball, indicated that the Saints were to receive temple ordinances before departing Nauvoo for a new location. (JS, Journal, 23 Feb. 1844; see also Revelation, 19 Jan. 1841, in Doctrine and Covenants [103]:12, 1844 ed. [D&C 124:39]; and “Washing,” and “Anoint,” in the glossary.)
Bernhisel, a physician, previously served as a bishop in the New York branch of the church. On 14 February 1845 Kimball was part of a council in which it was decided that Bernhisel “be appointed a traveling Bishop to visit the churches.” There is no record of Bernhisel fulfilling such an appointment.
