An entry was made in the Nauvoo City Council Rough Minute book on 7 June 1843 that the mayor signed this order for Sloan for the balance due him on his salary for 1842. This transaction was recorded in the Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger on 9 June 1843. (Nauvoo City Council Rough Minute Book, Nov. 1842–Jan. 1844, 18; Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger, 52.)

There is not an extant order for James Sloan for $26.50, and nothing was recorded in the Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger. There is an order to Sloan dated 30 January 1843 for 34.50 that was recorded in the ledger. Possibly the 14 Jan. 1843 order was folded into this larger order. (Pay Order to Nauvoo City Treasurer for James Sloan, 30 Jan. 1843; Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger, 52.)
