Docketing on the back of the note indicates it was filed with other claims against JS’s estate in the Hancock County Probate Court in , Illinois, in 1845. Sometime in the ensuing decades, it was removed from the custody of the court. In 2008, the document was for sale in the F. G. Williams & Co. catalog produced by Lyndon W. Cook. As of 2022, the note was in private possession.
On or before the twenty fourth day of January one thousand eight hundred and Forty Four, For value received, I promise to pay Joseph Smith or bearor Two hundred dollars, with Interest at six per cent per annum.
