Biography

17 Apr. 1811–1860. Botanist, physician. Born in Oxford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. Son of Gideon Riggs and Susan Picher. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ordained an elder, before 3 June 1831. Ordained a high priest, 25 Oct. 1831, in Orange, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Appointed to serve mission to southern U.S., 25 Jan. 1832. Excommunicated, 26 Feb. 1833, but later reinstated. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Married first Lovina S. Williams, 19 Nov. 1834, in Geauga Co., Ohio. Served mission to New York and Massachusetts with Joseph Young, 1835. Elder’s license recorded, 27 Apr. 1836, in Kirtland, Geauga Co. Moved to what became Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1836. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1839. Excommunicated, Mar. 1839, in Quincy, but later reinstated. Member of Quincy branch, 21 Nov. 1843. Wife died, ca. 1846. Married second Eunice M. Stone, 8 Mar. 1851, in Adams Co. Buried in Quincy.
