Biography

1 July 1797–16 Oct. 1851. Farmer, carpenter. Born in Oswego Co., New York. Son of Daniel Avery and Sarah. Moved to Franklin Co., Ohio, by 1821. Married Margaret Adams, 4 Jan. 1821, in Franklin Co. Moved to Worthington, Franklin Co., by Sept. 1825; to Perry, Franklin Co., by June 1830; to Colwell, Schuyler Co., Illinois, 1832; and to Rushville, Schuyler Co., 1833. Moved to Lee Co., Iowa Territory, before Jan. 1840. Appointed to preside over elders quorum at Ambrosia and Montrose, Lee Co., 4 Jan. 1840. Purchased land in Camden, Schuyler Co., 10 Oct.1840. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, before 1842. Moved to Bear Creek Precinct, Hancock Co., before Dec. 1843. Kidnapped and taken to Missouri, 2–25 Dec. 1843. Volunteered to go on exploring expedition to Oregon Country and California, 23 Feb. 1844. Ordained a high priest, 8 Oct. 1844, in Nauvoo. Excommunicated, after Jan. 1846. Moved to Camden, before June 1850, where he died.
