Biography
13 Apr. 1802–1 May 1871. Merchant, ropemaker. Born in New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. Son of Daniel Butler and Mary Davis. Married first Wealthy H. Jenney, 21 Dec. 1828, in New Bedford. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by William Hutchings, ca. 1842. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1843. Rented JS’s red brick store with Philip B. Lewis, Dec. 1843–May 1844. Moved store to his home on Parley Street in Nauvoo. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Wife died, 1 Aug. 1844, in Nauvoo. Returned to New Bedford, by Dec. 1844. Excommunicated, 28 Apr. 1845. Moved to Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, by Sept. 1848. Married second Eliza Hathaway, 3 Sept. 1848, in Freetown, Bristol Co. Died in Plymouth.
