Biography
16 Feb. 1817–31 Jan. 1900. Undertaker, sexton, carpenter, grocer, farmer, horticulturalist. Born in Epsom, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. Son of John Wallace and Mary True. Married Mary C. McMurphy, 13 Feb. 1840, in New Hampshire. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Freeman Nickerson, 1842. Presided over branch of church in New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, July 1844–Mar. 1845. Ordained a high priest, 18 Oct. 1844. Visited Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, Apr.–Oct. 1845. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving by 29 Sept. 1847. Helped choose site for Salt Lake City Cemetery. First sexton of Salt Lake City Cemetery, 1849–1864. Served mission to England, Oct. 1849–Aug. 1852. Counselor to president of Salt Lake Stake, 1860–1874. Director of Deseret Agricultural and Manufacturing Society, beginning 1864. Served mission to eastern U.S., Oct. 1869–Mar. 1870. Served as president of Salt Lake Stake, 1874–1876. Member of Deseret Horticultural Society, 1875. Died in Granger, Salt Lake Co., Utah. Buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
