Biography

1804–18 May 1844. U.S. surveyor, politician. Born in South Carolina. Moved to Muscatine Co., Iowa Territory, 1837. Elected to represent Muscatine, Louisa, and Slaughter counties in first Iowa territorial legislature, 1838–1839. Appointed brigadier general in Iowa territorial militia, 9 Jan. 1839. Appointed department surveyor for Iowa Territory, 1839. Surveyed site for capital of Iowa Territory, beginning June 1839. Elected to represent Johnson Co. in Iowa territorial legislature, Aug. 1839. Married Harriet Wheeler Robbins, 28 Sept. 1839, in Adams Co., Illinois. Moved to Scott Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Went to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, Nov. 1843, to assist JS and Latter-day Saints in petitioning Congress for redress for wrongs committed against them in Missouri. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., by 1841, where he died.
