Clark, John Bullock
Biography
17 Apr. 1802–29 Oct. 1885. Lawyer, politician. Born at Madison Co., Kentucky. Moved to Howard Co., Missouri Territory, 1818. Practiced law in Fayette, Howard Co., beginning 1824. Clerk of Howard Co. courts, 1824–1834. Appointed brigadier general in Missouri militia, 1830. Appointed major general in Missouri militia. Appointed to command Missouri militia operations against Latter-day Saint forces, 27 Oct. 1838; arrived in Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 4 Nov. 1838, after Saints had surrendered. Insisted Saints leave Missouri; in conjunction with civil authorities, oversaw prosecution of Latter-day Saint prisoners at preliminary hearing, Nov. 1838. Member of Missouri House of Representatives, 1850–1851. Member of U.S. House of Representatives, 1857–1861. Died at Fayette.
